Board of Faith & Life

You could say that the job of the USMB Board of Faith and Life (BFL) is to keep us all on the same page. We want to be developing leaders and planting and growing spiritually healthy congregations grounded in the Bible and transforming our communities. BFL offers spiritual guidance in matters of faith, ethics, doctrine, theology and Christian living so that we can be ONE family serving our Lord as we pursue our ONE life transformation mission.

The BFL holds central the biblical statement, "For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ." (1 Cor. 3:11.)

The Responsibilities of the Board of Faith and Life are to:

  • Provide spiritual oversight and serve as the guardian of the Confession of Faith. Any changes or modifications to the Confession of Faith must be processed through this Board for presentation to the churches;
  • Watch over the spiritual life of USMB and its churches and give guidance and direction in matters of faith, doctrine and ethics. It shall, when necessary, initiate appropriate action or serve as a reference body in issues of spiritual and social concern;
  • Function as an advisory board to district conferences in matters of ethics, doctrine, and polity;
  • Initiate appropriate disciplinary action when conditions contrary to the teaching of the Bible and USMB principles exist in our churches and conferences;
  • Convene study conferences for consultation and discernment on issues of faith, discipleship or polity; and
  • Commission the dissemination of information in print and other media to facilitate wider participation in study and consensus building.

Pastoral Documents

BFL has revised and improved USMB documents including the Ministry Licensing Application, Ordination and Licensing Policies and Procedures, Ordination Application Questionnaire, Membership Affiliation Covenant, Pastoral Covenant and Conflict Covenant.

In May 2015, the BFL offered a new resource manual to offer guidance to a church who might be called upon to process sexual abuse within their church.

Article 13 Forum

The Board of Faith and Life has initiated a discussion forum to help facilitate further conversation among USMB's on the Confession of Faith article on Love, Peacemaking and Reconciliation.
